Your love and generosity helped raise $2,175 for AIDS support services through the PFLAG-Paul Delph team — which was the largest amount raised by all the many wonderful teams who participated.

Meet the PAUL DELPH TEAM at 9:30 a.m. at the Team Registration Booth

Dear Steadfast Members of the Paul Delph Team:

It's that time for the annual WALK TO STOP AIDS. The Paul Delph Team is gearing up to walk again this year and we hope you'll join us. Last year, with your help, we were thrilled to once again support the good work of STOP AIDS (formerly known as AIDS Volunteers of Cincinnati – AVOC).

Since the team first walked in 1998, the Paul Delph Team has raised over $24,000 for STOP AIDS. Paul's family and team members are honored to help others who suffer. The work continues. Here’s what you can do to help...

JOIN US FOR THE WALK. We invite you to join us at Sawyer Point for the walk. Wear your most comfortable walking shoes and meet us at the Team Registration Booth no later than 9:30 am. Bring all donations you have collected. The walk begins promptly at 10 am.

Parking is available in the Sawyer Point Lot on East Pete Rose Way for $2 - $5. If that lot is full, there's another lot across the street on Eggelston.

If you walked last year and still have your Paul Delph Team button, bring it with you!

2011 Paul Delph Memorial Scholarship Award

Norwood High School, Cincinnati, Ohio

Congratulations Jacob!

The Paul Delph Memorial Scholarship fund was established in 1996 when we lost Paul to the AIDS virus. When Paul was a student here in the early 1970’s he knew he was gay, but he couldn’t talk to anyone about it… not his teachers, friends, not even his family.  Very few people understood sexual orientation in those days.

The Delph family is very pleased to see that the Norwood High School faculty, staff and students have come a long way since then.  Now Norwood is a safe supportive environment where gay people can be open about who they are without worry of harm or discrimination.  We are very proud of you and your Gay/Straight Alliance.

So, it is my great pleasure to award this year’s Paul Delph Memorial Scholarship to Jacob Gerrety. Jacob's activities and honors include band, pep jazz, orchestra, marching and concert band, Gay-Straight Alliance Founder and President, Presidential academic award and honor roll. Jacob will attend the University of Cincinnati, majoring in Psychology.

About the Scholarship Awards

The family of Paul Delph has been awarding the Paul Delph Memorial Scholarship to a Norwood High student since 1997... one year after Paul passed away due to complications of the AIDS virus.  Paul graduated from Norwood in 1975 and later from the University of Cincinnati, College Conservatory of Music.  He then went on to a successful eighteen-year career in Los Angeles where he performed, recorded and wrote music for artists including The Pointer Sisters, Toni Basil, The Moody Blues and Bernie Taupin, among others. When Paul walked the halls of Norwood High he knew he was gay.  He knew this from a very young age, but he didn't talk to anyone about it because in the 1970's very few people talked about it or understood it.  Fortunately, our world has matured in the last thirty-five years and thanks to TV programs like Will and Grace, movies like Philadelphia and people like Ellen Degeneras, we are a more informed public; gay people can come out with less fear of reprisal.  And yet, coming out is still a brave and risky thing to do.

In the past we have asked the Foundation, when possible, to choose a student recipient for the Paul Delph scholarship who was pursuing a college degree in music or the arts.  That's what we have done again this year.  We want future Norwood High grads to know that next year we look forward to presenting this award to an openly gay student. 

This year it is my pleasure and privilege to present two Paul Delph scholarship awards.  The first award goes to Jacob Hooks.  Jacob is a four-year member of the Silhouettes and has been a member of the Academic Team for three years.  He held the lead in this year's spring play, Footloose.  Jacob will attend Case Western Reserve University majoring in Biology and Environmental Sciences.

The second award goes to Kristen Jackson.  Kristen is a member of the Key Club, marching band, jazz band, concert band, and the Anthony Munoz Foundation.  She has also served as stage crew manager and section leader of the band.  Kristen will attend Northern Kentucky University majoring in Nursing.
